There are many seperate types of pests, some share the same solutions.

Try and identfy your pest or pests and make a list if necessary eg:

Cockroaches, termites, white ants, ants, spiders, silverfish, fleas, moths, rats, mice etc.

The more comprehensive the list, the better!

The approach to getting rid of the pests can then be discussed with the Pest Controller over the phone, saving time and ensuring the pest controller knows exactly what needs to be dealt with and the tools needed.

Make sure you explain the location of the pests and any accessibility issues there may be to reach the pests and any people and pets that are at the location.

The methods used could differ depending on these factors.

Pest Info

Appearance

Beetles are the largest and most diverse group on insects on Earth. Over 300,000 species have been described worldwide, with over 20,000 occurring in Australia. Their enormous success can be linked to their remarkable body design. Beetles have modified their fore wings into a hard shell, folding over their delicate hind wings and abdomen. This feature makes beetles incredibly tough and allows them to burrow through dirt and wood without damaging their gauzy flying wings.

With their strong chewing mandibles, beetles can eat a wide variety of food and some species are serious pests of agricultural crops, stored food products and timber. Two species that are of great concern to us are wood boring beetles that attack timber and wooden furniture in our homes.

The Powderpost beetle (Lyctus brunneus), and the Furniture beetle (Anobium punctatum) are both small (4-7 mm in length), dark brown beetles with cylindrical bodies to help them burrow through wood. However, it is quite easy to tell them apart by looking at their heads. The Furniture beetle keeps his head tucked up underneath the thorax – in fact, it looks as though he is wearing a little hoodie!

Breeding

The females of these species are usually active in the warmer months and often target sawmills where freshly harvested logs and timber provide an ideal place for egg laying. The beetles use a long slender tube or ovipositor at the end of their abdomen to deposit up to 80 eggs in the timber. The Powderpost beetle lays her eggs in tiny pores within the timber, whilst the Furniture beetle cements her eggs onto cracks, rough surfaces and cut edges.

The beetles have a complete lifecycle, with an egg, larva, pupa and adult stage. From the eggs emerge small white grubs which will remain hidden within the wood, boring small holes through the timber as they feed. It may take several months or even years for them to grow, at which time they will move towards the surface and form a tiny cocoon. After a few weeks the adults emerge from their pupa, burrow out of the timber and fly off in search of a mate.

Habitat

Both species of beetles are distributed world-wide, preferring warm, humid environments. They can be found in dead logs and stumps in natural environments, as well as domestic dwellings. Within our homes they will target:

Furniture

Wooden crates

Antique furniture

Wall panelling

Flooring

Structural timber

Ceiling battens

The beetles are usually nocturnal and shelter in cracks and crevices within timber during the day. They are attracted to light and can be seen flying around lights on warm evenings.

Diet

Both beetles consume wood when they are larvae, targeting the thin, nitrogen-rich layer of sapwood located just underneath the bark. But the way in which these beetles lay their eggs in timber determines the type of trees they can utilise. Powderpost beetles are unable to lay their eggs in pine trees as the pores in the timber are too small to accommodate their eggs. Instead they feed on the sapwood of various hardwood timbers such as oak, ash, mahogany and teak.

Furniture beetles usually target pine timbers and avoid hardwoods. They will also consume the inner layer of heartwood in birch and beech trees.

Pest Dangers

The feeding behaviour of the larval stages of these beetles can cause numerous problems such as:

Cause aesthetic problems with holes in the timber surface from emerging beetles and piles of frass accumulating around emergence holes

The larvae bore holes through the wood giving it a honeycombed appearance and cause structural weakness

Due to the secretive behavior of the larvae, we usually only notice infestations once severe damage has been done

Severe infestations can cause flooring collapses, especially when heavy objects are placed on the surface.

Evidence of these pests can reduce the resale value of your house

Furniture beetle larvae carry tiny parasitic mites on their bodies which can bite humans – often referred to as woodworm bite.

Pest Prevention

The following measures can be taken to reduce the likelihood of infestations:

The beetle eggs are unable to hatch in dry conditions, so try and limit moisture by fixing any leaking taps, improving drainage around your yard and using dehumidifiers to reduce dampness in your home

Be vigilant! Look out for emergence holes and powdery frass on or near timber

Only use “immunised” timber for building & furnishing, which has been impregnated with preservatives to discourage wood boring beetles

Be wary when purchasing antique or second-hand furniture and recycled timbers

Replace any infested timber and furniture

Remember, most infestations begin while the timber is at the lumberyard, so choose suppliers and manufacturers with sound treatment practices

Coating the timber’s surface with varnish, shellac, paraffin wax or paint will make it less attractive to egg-laying females. However, this will not help if the timber is already infested.

Pest Response

1300 Pest Control treatments are environmentally friendly, child and animal safe and can be specifically tailored to suit your needs. Fast acting fumigants are used to treat infested timber, killing adults and larvae and preventing females from laying their eggs in the future.

Is my infestation Powderpost or Furniture beetles?

Here’s a tip. Look for the frass which will often drop from the emergence holes of the adult beetles. Rub some between your fingers. If it is fine and powdery like flour, you have a Powderpost beetle infestation. If it feels gritty between your fingers, a Furniture beetle is causing the damage. Now go and wash your hands!

Interesting Facts about Beetles.

Did you know?

Before laying her eggs, the female Powderpost beetle will chew a small area of the wood, assessing the starch and moisture content. Only once she is satisfied with the quality of the timber will she deposit her eggs.

The female Furniture beetle supplies her eggs with a small patch of living yeast cells. The hatching larvae will consume the yeast, which will then reside in their gut, helping them to break down the tough cellulose in their wood-based diet.

It is highly recommended to have a Pre Purchase Inspection and an annual Pest Inspection to check for Termite Damage and other Timber Pests

We offer competitive prices for Commercial and Residential customers

1300 Pest Control technicians are fully licensed and insured to carry out Pest Inspections to Australian Standards or greater.

Pest Inspections

In Australia there is a strong need for a Pre Purchase Inspection and an annual Pest Inspection because termites and other timber pests can cause costly damage to property if not detected.

If you are purchasing a property, we can arrange a Building and Pest Inspection at a suitable time with the vendor or agent to carry out a thorough investigation of the home or office.

Termites feed on wood, so if your home contains wooden frames or structural elements, then your property is at risk of a Termite Infestation and Termite Damage that could cost you thousands.

The Pest Inspection detects any Termite activity before the cost of Termite Damage to your structure is excessive. Following our Pest Inspection our Timber Pest Technician can advise you on Termite Prevention measures that can reduce the risk of Termite Infestation and Termite Damage.

Detecting Termite Damage through Pest Inspection

Termite Damage often goes undetected for some time because termites eat from the inside out, so termite damage can be substantial by the time it is detected. It is therefore highly recommended to have and annual Pest Inspection on your property by a qualified timber pest technician.

Signs of Termite Infestation and Termite Damage:

> Wood that sounds hollow when tapped
> Gaps or crumbling wooden beams
> Termite mud tubes, which run above ground and are built by Termites as tunnels to avoid exposure.

DIY or Professional?

Most DIY methods for Termite Control are not effective or successful long term strategies.

When you consider the value of your property, scheduling an annual Pest Inspection by a qualified, licenced professional for your property is a sound investment.

Approximately half of all Pest Controllers are not properly licenced or fully insured for the work they carry out. Don’t just settle for the quickest turn-around or the cheapest price as you may not always be getting what you thought you were paying for.

1300 PEST CONTROL guarantees you peace of mind by only ensuring all Technicians are experienced, qualified, licenced and fully insured.

Our quality termite controllers will carry out a thorough inspection of your property, the foundations, the inner structural elements, fencing and all wood products in and around the house and provide you with advice on a tailored Termite Management System (TMS) that best suits your property.

1300 Pest Control is the Number you Know and Trust!

Our technicians can be trusted to carry out a professional job. They have a full Timber Pest Licence, Professional Indemnity and Public Liability Insurance.

All Pest Inspections are carried out to Australian Standards or greater.

Pest Inspections are very thorough, at least 1 hour for an average house. The Inspector will need access to all rooms including the ceiling cavity.

The Pest Inspection is performed with an array of tools and thorough Visual Inspection of the premises. These tools can include but are not limited to:

Moisture Meter – an electronic device that detects moisture migration. Termites are almost 100% moisture and so this is a required tool in inspections.

Video Inspection/ Boroscope – allows inspectors to see inside of wall cavities, trees and other structures (only with the approval of the property owner).

Termatrac – Radar device. Termatrac is a valuable tool that is used to determine the likelihood of termite activity in a particular location.

Thermal Imaging – infrared technology that detects hot spots in wall cavities. Can assist in Termite Detection in conjunction with other methods of detection.

Inspection Probes (Sounding Donger)/ Listening devices – important for hearing termite activity within the buildings walls.

Pest Inspection Report – will be provided within 24 hours documenting termite activity and the risk of Termite Infestation.

Termite Control has advanced significantly in recent years. All 1300 PestControl branches support Industry best practices and keep up to date with the continuing improvements in Pest Inspection, Termite Treatment and Termite Prevention.

We offer competitive prices for Commercial and Residential customers

How to Get Rid of Spiders. Spider control in house

Spider control. Spiders are part of our environment and have an important role to play in the control of insects in and around our homes. Spiders fall into a few categories, Ground Dwelling Spiders, Orb Weaving Spiders, Spider Anglers and Other Spiders, categories by where they reside commonly. Most spiders that we encounter are non aggressive and/ or produce a non toxic bite. There are those few though that give the spider a bad reputation, that will show signs of aggression and whose bites cause be painful and at times fatal.

The best method for how to get rid of spiders or spider control in house is to reply on direct contact between the spider and the insecticide. A blanket spray spider treatment will prove a positive result in eradicating ground dwelling spiders, particularly if the spider infestation is severe, but will also destroy many useful creatures. Consult with your pest technician as to what your spider problem is and the activity that you experience. Your technician will carry out an inspection of the property and ensure areas such as roof voids, crevices, mail boxes and other commonly accessed areas to specific spider types are treated. Proper spider identification to determine control methods and minimize blanket sprays is important.

Once spiders have established themselves it is difficult to get rid of them without professional help.

Spiders have the remarkable ability to close off their lungs for several hours, so many surface sprays and aerosols fail to kill them and their egg cases. The most efficient method is the use of fast-acting contact chemicals that kill spiders dead in their tracks.

1300 Pest Control treatments are environmentally friendly, child and animal safe and can be specifically tailored to suit your needs. Our pest control specialists will thoroughly inspect your home to determine the extent of your spider problem and will recommend an appropriate action plan.

1300 PestControl offer clients Warrantees on Treatments*

Spider Prevention

In most cases, spiders are timid, reluctant to bite and are great for controlling cockroaches and other nasties in your home. It is usually best to leave them be, as many people are bitten whilst trying to capture or kill spiders. However, if you have young children, are worried about being biten or simply can’t stand sharing your house with 8-legged tenants, you can try the following:

Seal any cracks and crevices around your home and place rolled up towels or door stoppers under your doors. Even the largest huntsman spider can flatten its body to sneak through tiny gaps.

Control insects – spiders enter our house seeking readily available prey and will quickly move on if there are no bugs for them to eat

Turn off exterior lights at night time – these will attract insects into your home, encouraging spiders

Keep your lawn mowed, bushes well pruned and yard clear of debris. This will reduce shelter for both spiders and the insects they eat.

Remove any webs that you see in your home and stomp on any egg cases (or if you’re feeling charitable, pop them in a jar and release them in a nearby park or bushland).

Wear gloves when gardening or handling rubbish

Wear footwear when outside, particularly at night when ground dwelling spiders are more active and in spider prone areas such as on bushwalks

Tidy up outside toys and articles each night to avoid spiders using these things are temporary shelter

Be alert for ground dwelling spiders after very wet conditions and after insecticidal treatments as they tend to wander further than usual

Spider Facts

Arachnida Order Araneae

What Do Spiders Look Like?

Spiders are arachnids, a group of 8-legged critters including mites, ticks and scorpions. The body of a spider can be divided into 2 parts – the “front body” known as the head or prosoma and the “rear body” called the abdomen or opisthosoma.

Most spiders have 8 eyes, but depending on the species they may have 6, 4, 2 and in some cave dwelling species – none at all!

Despite all of those eyes, many spiders have poor vision, relying instead on touch and taste to detect prey. Jumping spiders are the exception – they have excellent vision and can even track their own image in a mirror!

Spiders have two finger-like palps near their mouth, which are often mistaken for legs or antennae (which arachnids don’t possess). They help spiders to taste and manipulate their prey (like a little set of cutlery). The jaws of a spider are known as chelicerae. They consist of a strong, wide base which tapers down in to a sharp, curved fang. Venom is pumped from glands in the head through a narrow tube ending in a tiny hole at the tip of the fang, much like a hypodermic needle.

Spiders have eight legs, which are covered in highly sensitive hairs that help to detect their surroundings – in particular the vibrations caused by nearby prey.

How Do Spiders Breed?

Attracting a mate in the spider world is not all that different from our dating rituals. Spiders use alluring perfumes (chemical smells known as pheromones) and strut their stuff (by flashing brightly coloured legs or abdomens). Males impress females with their dancing skills (by waving their legs or body) and will give elaborately wrapped gourmet gifts (usually a fly bundled up in silk).

Male spiders lack a proper sex organ. Instead they deposit their sperm on a little pad of silk and then pick it up with the swollen tips of their palps. The male then transfers it to the female.

Eggs are laid in batches wrapped in silk to protect them from the elements and hungry predators. The silken egg case can contain several hundred eggs. Some spiders show maternal care – a female wolf spider will carefully tow her egg case around until they hatch and will even give her young spiderlings a piggy-back ride on her abdomen until they are big enough to fend for themselves.

Spiders will moult their skin between 4 and 20 times to reach adulthood, depending on the size of the spider.

Where Do Spiders Live?

Spiders are found in every country, with the exception of Antarctica. Over 40 000 species have been described so far.

Australian Spiders can occupy many different habitats, from tree canopies to underground burrows, in domestic dwellings and even in and around the water. Many spiders disperse by ballooning – releasing parachute-like webs from the end of their bodies and rising on the breeze to colonise new locations. They can travel hundreds of kilometers and have even been found floating several thousand meters in the air!

What Do Spiders Eat?

All spiders are carnivores, preferring to catch and kill live prey. They will eat any organism small enough for them to overpower, from insects such as flies and grasshoppers for smaller spiders, through to lizards, frogs and even small birds in larger species.

With a few rare exceptions, all spiders produce venom which is used to subdue their prey. Venom also contains enzymes to help break down tissue – spiders have no teeth so can only suck up liquid food.

Their hunting techniques are varied. Orb weavers produce large silken webs and wait for insects to become tangled in the sticky threads. Huntsman spiders are ground hunters using their powerful legs to chase down prey. The clever (and very lazy) net-casting spider can’t be bothered spinning an entire web. Instead he makes a little net which he holds between his front legs. He throws this web over passing insects, much like a lasso!

Are Spiders Dangerous?

It goes without saying that spiders are probably the most feared and hated animals on Earth. But of the 40 000 plus species world-wide only around 200 can inflict a harmful bite. Many spiders have fangs that are too small to pierce human skin and most spiders are timid creatures, only striking as a last resort.

Most Australian Spiders are no threat to humans and function well as natural pest controllers themselves.  Some common types found in and around the home that are harmless are;

Garden Orb Weaver – Not aggressive. Hides in foliage during the day and constructs web at night.

Golden Orb Weaver – Not aggressive. Web is very strong with slight yellowish sheen.

Huntsman – Not aggressive. Lives under bark or mulch during the day and active of a night, often found entering houses to feed on insects.

Daddy Long Legs – Not aggressive. Lives mainly indoors, a tangled web tucked into crevices, cracks, upper walls and ceilings.

Spider Identification is important. Some of the more commonly found spiders in our homes or those to watch out for spider bite symptoms are listed below.

Red back Spiders

Latrodectus hasseltii

Adult female red back spiders are 12-15mmthe size of a fifty cent coin, with shiny black legs and head. Males are only 3-4cm, Their abdomen is black to dark brown, with a bright red stripe down the centre and a red marking underneath their abdomen in the shape of an hour-glass. Only adult female red back spiders possess fangs that are large enough to pierce our skin – males and juveniles are considered harmless.

The Red back Spider has a very bad reputation and belongs to the same genus as the infamous Black Widow Spider in the Northern Hemisphere. The following factors contribute to its status as a notorious pest:

Widespread throughout Australia.

Very tough – can withstand extremely cold and dry conditions.

Breeds prolifically – egg sacs can contain up to 300 eggs and are resistant to aerosol insecticide sprays.

Redbacks are rarely found in natural forest, instead preferring developed urban environments such as our homes and backyards.

They build their tangled webs under the lips of pot plants, the handles and edges of wheelie bins, the rim of above-ground pools; around outdoor furniture and play equipment, under window sills and around the petrol pumps at service stations.

They can inflict a painful bite and their venom contains a powerful neurotoxin. Spider bite symptoms may include sweating, nausea, vomiting, fainting, irregular or rapid heartbeat, muscle spasms and paralysis. Anyone bitten should seek medical advice immediately

Over 5000 bites are recorded in Australia each year – thankfully a readily available, highly effective anti-venom means that few bites are fatal.

What to do if bitten by a RedBack Spider. Red back spider bite.

Remove any tight clothing and remain calm

Apply a cold pack to the bite being careful not to freeze tissue

Seek medical assistance promptly or call triple 0 for an Ambulance

Avoid all stimulation until medical assistance has been sought

White-tailed Spider

Lampona

The White-tailed Spider, also referred to as the white tip spider, gets its name from the pale spot located at the end of its dark grey, oval-shaped abdomen. It is the size of a fifty cent coin and doesn’t build a web, instead hunting food on foot. White-tails prefer cool, dark places and are frequently found in our homes on the walls, under beds and in bathrooms.

White-tailed spiders aren’t timid and will bite repeatedly if disturbed. Their venom is a cytotoxin, causing tissue death which paves the way for bacterial infections. Bites are painful and may be accompanied by redness, swelling and small ulcers. Despite reports in the media, there is no scientific evidence to support claims of extensive necrosis (widespread skin loss) and ulcers as a result of White-tailed spider bite symptoms.

What to do if bitten by a white tail spider. White tail spider bite.

Remove any tight clothing and remain calm

Apply a cold compress to the bite site

If you do suffer skin loss you need to seek emergency medical assistance. In these rare instances surgery in hospital can be required.

Funnel Web Spider

Altrax robustus

The Sydney Funnel Web Spider (as well as the Northern Rivers funnel web spider) is regarded as the most dangerous of all spiders in Australia to humans as their spider bite is very toxic and they are considered aggressive. They favour moist dark situations and are active in late summer and autumn. Males are the most sighted as wonder further in hunt of a female during the later summer months.

A pain will develop in the area of the bite and numbness could set in. Other spider bite symptoms that can develop include; nausea & vomiting, profuse sweating and collapse, frothing at the mouth, breathing difficulty, cramps and pain in the limbs and abdomen, deleriousness, twitching & contractions, sluggish reflexes, eye failure and coma. If you are bitten or even suspect it a funnel web bite seek an ambulance immediately as anti venom is available in most ambulances & well as hospitals.

What to do if bitten by a Funnel Web Spider. Funnel web spider bite.

Remove any tight clothing and remain calm

Apply pressure to the bite using a broad roller bandage or equivalent. Cover the bite side first and extend bandage to both extremities of the limb.

Call triple 0 for an Ambulance

Avoid all stimulation, avoid liquids, remain as calm as you can while waiting for help to arrive

Spider Web

Spider silk is one of the strongest substances on Earth. A single strand is five times stronger than a similar-sized strand of steel.

Kill cockroaches!

Face it, cockroaches are downright ugly little creatures that love to crawl around our homes, producing lots of babies and leaving cockroach poo wherever they go.

Cockroach poo, by the way, looks like round black specks of fine ground pepper.

The best cockroach prevention is to limit the supply of food and water and have an annual pest control treatment.

Below is a list of some of the fascinating facts about cockroaches thanks to David G. Gordon, author of The Complete Cockroach (available through Amazon publications).

Cockroaches can bite. The larger roaches have even been known to bite humans.

Cockroaches live in dirty & also very clean homes. They have larger colonies in less clean homes because there is a bigger food supply available.

German roaches lay about one sac of eggs per month with each sac can containing approximately 40 babies whilst American roaches lay a sac every 2-3 days, each containing about 12 babies. (That equates to an average of 480 little German Cockroaches from the one mum or a whopping 1752 American Cockroaches!!).

Cockroaches are active primarily for a 4 hour period during the night although they are seen at other times as well.

Cockroaches are not afraid of light. They just prefer darkness as to them the light signifies humans are around so they scurry to get away.

Some people think roaches must have eyes in the back of their heads, but they don’t. They do have tiny little hairs that gage the air movement around them, so they feel you, they don’t see you from behind.

Cockroaches come out for water far more often than they come out for food. Normally, one night of feasting is enough to last at least several days for a roach. They can live a month without food, but only a week without water

The reason substances like boric acid works to kill roaches is that they routinely clean themselves and each other. Thus, boric acid on their bodies will be consumed and kill them, and some of their friends. Boric acid can be made into a paste with flour and sugar and used as bait.

Roaches love onions.

Roaches eat meat, they are omnivores, so they will eat just about anything including dead animals.

Crushed cockroaches when applied to a wound, can help ease the sting

Cockroaches have white blood

A roach can live a week without a head. It dies after a week due to lack of water

A cockroach that has just shed its skin is white and has black eyes. It takes 8 hours to reproduce the skin layer.

Laboratory female roaches are able to reproduce without aid of a male. They produce all female offspring

The largest roach in the world is the Macropanesthia rhinocerus from Australia weighing in at up to 50 grams.

Cockroaches thrive in all conditions and live in the desert as well as the arctic

Most roaches, but not all, have the ability to fly.

Fried Cockroaches are common snacks in Cambodia

1300 Pest Control technicians are fully licensed and insured to carry out Termite Inspections to Australian Standards or greater.

When choosing a Building and Pest Inspection company, it is important not to contract someone simply because they offer the lowest price on Building and Pest Inspections because they may not be properly qualified, insured, licenced or they may just cut corners to save time.

It is important to know that most building inspectors are not qualified or experienced in timber pest inspections. If you are having a building inspection insist on a separate Pest Inspection in accordance with the Australian Standards AS4349.3.

1300 Pest Control does both Building and Pest Inspections.

Our Building Inspections are done in accordance to Australian standards 4349.1. Our Building Inspectors are fully licenced & insured as required by the Building Services Authority.

Timber Pest Inspection

Our Technician who performs these Timber Pest Inspections are fully accrediated & experienced and carry the appropriate current Licence and Insurance that is required for Timber Pest Managers.

Pest Inspections are very thorough.

Pest Inspection Report – generally will be provided within 24-48 business hours documenting termite activity and the risk of Termite Infestation.

Termites are a necessary and important part of our nature, provided they stick to nature. Termites convert dead trees into organic matter but by not being able to distinguish wooden materials found in the outdoors to that in the framework of our buildings termites pose a real threat to all buildings.

It is a requirement for all new buildings in the state of Queensland to have Termite Protection installed pre construction. Termite Protection is usually in the form of a Chemical Termite Barrier and/or Physical Termite Barrier, more often a combination of both.

As the most common type of Termite is the subterranean termite, installing a Termite Barrier under the slab and around the perimeter of the building is recommended to reduce entry from under the soil.

Physical Termite Barriers can consist of metal mesh, granite chips & stainless steel, physical materials that the termites cannot pass through.

Chemical Termite Barriers consist of Termiticide and can be applied to the soil and building materials which repel or kill termites.

For existing structures, many people opt for Termite Baiting as the strategy against Termites entering the building.

If installed correctly, a chemical Termite Barrier can provide effective Termite Protection. However, it is not always possible to install a chemical Termite Barrier post construction. There are several types of Termite Baits available in Australia. Termite bait is very effective in eliminating termite colonies.

Some factors to consider when looking for a Termite Protection system to suit your situation include location, building construction type, previous termite activity and budget.

Home owners and Asset Maintenance can also better their chance of Termite Protection through some simple house-keeping.

Don’t build garden beds right up to the wall of a building or store fire wood close to your home.

Fix all leaking pipes and hoses and perform self inspections a few times throughout the year.

Arrange for an annual Termite Inspection and get good Termite Protection advice for your specific environment.

It is highly recommended to have a Pre Purchase Inspection and an annual Termite Inspection to check for Termite Damage

If you are purchasing a property, we can arrange a Building and Pest Inspection at a suitable time with the vendor or agent to carry out a thorough investigation of the home or office.

We offer competitive prices for Commercial and Residential customers

1300 Pest Control technicians are fully licensed and insured to carry out Termite Inspections to Australian Standards or greater.

Termite Inspections

In Australia there is a strong need for a Pre Purchase Inspection and an annual Termite Inspection because termites and other timber pests can cause costly damage to property if not detected.

Termites feed on wood, so if your home contains wooden frames or structural elements, then your property is at risk of a Termite Infestation and Termite Damage that could cost you thousands.

The Termite Inspection detects any Termite activity before the cost of Termite Damage to your structure is excessive. Following our Termite Inspection our Timber Pest Technician can advise you on Termite Prevention measures that can reduce the risk of Termite Infestation and Termite Damage.

Detecting Termite Damage through Termite Inspection

Termite Damage often goes undetected for some time because termites eat from the inside out, so termite damage can be substantial by the time it is detected. It is therefore highly recommended to have and annual Termite Inspection on your property by a qualified timber pest technician.

Signs of Termite Infestation and Termite Damage:

> High moisture readings

> Wood that sounds hollow when tapped
> Gaps or crumbling wooden beams
> Termite mud tubes, which run above ground and are built by Termites as tunnels to avoid exposure.

DIY or Professional?

Most DIY methods for Termite Control are not effective or successful long term strategies.

When you consider the value of your property, scheduling an annual Termite Inspection by a qualified, licenced professional for your property is a sound investment.

All Termite Inspections are carried out to Australian Standards or greater.

Termite Inspections are very thorough, at least 1 hour for an average house. The Inspector will need access to all rooms including the ceiling cavity.

The Termite Inspection is performed with an array of tools and thorough Visual Inspection of the premises.

All 1300 PestControl branches support Industry best practices and keep up to date with the continuing improvements in Termite Inspection, Termite Treatment and Termite Prevention.

Got moths in pantry? 1300 Pest Control can identify and eliminate the moth pest.

Insecta Order Lepidoptera

Pest Info

Appearance

Moths belong to the same group as butterflies, however are generally less popular and not as flashy in appearance. Both have large compound eyes, long antennae and tube-like mouthparts that are rolled up when not in use. Their 4 membranous wings are covered in a double layer of overlapping scales, which can be brightly coloured and elaborately patterned.

“Pantry moth” is a term used to describe several different species of moths that invade our kitchen cupboards. This includes the Indian meal moth, Mediterranean flour moth and other grain moths and seed moths. These different species are all quite similar in their general lifestyle and appearance, hence the collective name “pantry moths”.

Pantry moths are generally small, with a wingspan of around 15 mm and a body length of 10-20 mm. They are mostly brown or grey in colour. Like many moths, they are nocturnal and are often attracted to lights at night.

Breeding

Pantry moths have a complete lifecycle with an egg, larva, pupa and adult stage.

Adult moths use pheromones to locate each other in the dark. After mating, females lay their eggs individually or in small masses on open food products and storage containers. They can produce 150-400 eggs, which will hatch into tiny larvae.

The caterpillars are generally pale yellow or cream in colour, with a dark brown head. They will shed their skins 5 to 7 times, growing rapidly between each moult. They form a tiny silken cocoon, from which they will emerge as an adult.

The entire lifecycle from egg to adult takes around 4-8 weeks, depending on the temperature.

Habitat

The majority of moths that are pests of stored products are not native to Australia and have been accidentally brought here through ships and trading. Moths frequently infest foods whilst they are in storage and during transit. Their small size means they often remain undetected. In fact, many household infestations occur when we purchase food that is already infested and unknowingly bring these pests into our homes.

In the wild, these moths would be scavengers of plant products, living on seeds, fruit and leaves. But they can readily adapt to indoor environments. And while they flourish in warm habitats, they are very hardy and larvae can survive temperatures as low as 10 degrees celcius.

Diet

The adult moths are not to blame for destroying your food. They have tiny mouth-parts and generally do not feed. It’s their hungry larvae that do the damage, and they will munch through almost any kind of stored product including flour, cereals, seeds, powdered milk, dried fruits and nuts, pasta, rice, biscuits, chocolate and dry pet foods and bird seed.

As the larvae feed, they will cover the surface with silken webs which they use as shelter. Frass and food particles cling to the silken strands and webs are often the first signs we see of an infestation.

Pest Dangers

Pantry moth infestations are not only annoying, but can cost us significantly by rendering our foods inedible. And they have expensive taste – devouring costly foods items such as dried fruits, nuts and chocolate.

The chewing action of larvae directly damages food products.

Larvae also indirectly reduce the quality of food by contaminating it with shed skins, droppings and dead individuals.

Feeding and growing larvae produce a lot of metabolic heat, which increases moisture and temperature. Bacteria and moulds flourish in these humid environments, speeding up the process of food spoilage.

Pest Prevention

Once pantry moths have become established in your home, they are very difficult to eliminate. However, an infestation can often be avoided in the first place by being vigilant, adopting thorough cleaning practices and by restricting the moth’s access to available food.

Be careful when purchasing food products. Avoid any broken or damaged packaging & check for signs of silk webbing, larvae or their frass.

Buying organic cereals, nuts and spices from health food shops and markets can be risky. Try and opt for pre-packaged items, rather than filling your own bags from bulk quantities.

Try buying smaller amounts of foods you use infrequently, so you reduce the length of time items are stored within your pantry.

Store all of your food in air-tight containers, preferably glass jars with screw-top lids. Ensure lids are screwed on tightly after use.

Wipe up any spills on your benches and in your cupboards. Female moths can deposit hundreds of eggs on tiny crumbs and flakes of food.

Infestations often originate from dry dog & cat food or birdseed stored in open containers. Make sure all food items (whether they are for humans or animals) are stored in air-tight containers.

Place flours, grains and rice in containers and store in the freezer for a week. This will kill any eggs, larvae or adults, without affecting the quality of your food.

Food can also be heated in boiling water or in the oven to kill moths and their larvae. This is a good method for foods such as nuts and dried fruits.

If you do find infested food in your cupboard, dispose of it immediately. Treat remaining food items using the methods above, vacuum thoroughly & then wipe down shelves with hot water. Ensure all food is stored in air-tight containers before returning to the cupboard.

Be vigilant! Be on constant lookout for adult moths resting on your walls and signs of silk and frass in your food. Sticky traps available from your supermarket won’t control an infestation, but are a good way to monitor your home for moths.

Pest Response

Once pantry moths have established in your home, it is almost impossible to remove them without professional help. Sticky traps and pheromone traps will reduce adult moths, but will not target the larvae or eggs hidden within your food. And over-the-counter dusts and surface sprays contain toxic chemicals which can be risky when used around food products.

1300 Pest Control treatments are environmentally friendly, child and animal safe and can be specifically tailored to suit your needs.

Our pest control specialists will thoroughly inspect your home to determine the extent of your moth problem and will recommend an appropriate action plan. Specifically targeted chemicals will rapidly knock down moths, without any harm to your food or your family’s health.

Did you know?

Pantry moths are pretty talented when it comes to getting into our food. Adults can squeeze through holes as small as 3mm in diameter. And larvae simply chew holes through plastic bags, cardboard boxes and wrappers to get to your goodies.

As much as we can loathe sharing our home with them, natural enemies such as geckoes and spiders are one of the most efficient ways to reduce moths in your home. Just think of it as the lesser of two weevils…oops, I mean evils!

We generally think of Termites as white in colour with an almost translucent appearance, wingless, completely blind (in most termite species), and live in fully enclosed conditions void of light.

When the weather warms up so do the activity levels of many of the household pests we come in contact with, particularly when it comes to our outdoors. One such beast is the Termite Alate, or more commonly known as the Termite Swarmer.

Termite Alates however are winged with black pigmentation and have well developed eyes. They are specially produced reproductives who primary job is to mate, firstly finding an Alate of the opposite sex and then bed down in an acceptable new home location such as a damp and decayed tree stump and commence mating. The female will lay a few dozen eggs in the hope to raise these offspring to carry on the workings of the newly established colony.

A swarm can be quite a sight, and usually occur in the warmers months from Spring to Autumn and closely following a good downpour or rainy conditions. One minute there is no insect activity and the next you think that a part of the sky has greyed as the sheer density of a swarm can be truly a visual spectacular.

If you are not home you can work out if you have experienced a swarm by the number of dead insects piled within a close proximity. Although they have wings they are extremely weak flyers and will fall & loose their wings in even the lightest of winds, less than 5km p/hr.

If you have experienced a swarm then the first thing to do is not to panic and not to douse the beasts with your Bagon or Mortein or whatever the household insecticide of choice may be. The swarm will only last for a short while.

The basic steps to follow are:

1. Don’t Panic! The Swarm could also be a swarm of ants instead of termites.

2. Identify if you have Termites or Ants if possible. Collect some samples. Swarming Termites and Ants look similar however are not the same. Alate Termites have thick, broad bodies with wings of similar size and shape extending from the body in a straight line. Their antennae are either straight or curve outwards. Ants have antennae that is short and bent in appearance. Their bodies look segmented, that is the middle section is narrow with a wider upper and lower body area. Their wings are uneven in size and shape, fanning wider than the body. My basic take on it is the Termite is much like a man, broad and straight while the Ant is like the woman with more curves and more spectacular wings.

3. If you have had Pest Inspections in the past or if there is a history of a Termite infestation/ damage then check to see if you are covered by any warranty. So long as you have complied to an existing warranty you would be covered for follow up work from the same Pest Controller. Termite damage and Pest Inspections are not generally covered through general Home Insurance Policies.

4. If no existing warranties, call in a Professional Pest Controller to do a home inspection and show him the collected samples for further identification. Be sure to choose a fully licenced and insured Pest Controller and don’t be afraid to get several quotes or to pre-qualify the company by talking to them over the phone prior to an appointment or through research.
