Wasp Nest Removal Tips

Wasps and regular homes should never co-exist.

Interestingly enough, although there are a multitude of insects in our environments it is those that belong to the Hymenoptera order, ie Bees, Wasps, Hornets and Ants that are the pests to most likely cause medical issues, sometimes resulting in hospitalization.  With Wasps, Bees & Hornets, the severity of a sting is determined by the following factors;

  1. type of wasp, bee or hornet – European Wasps are particularly nasty.
  2. the location of the sting
  3. the number of stings and
  4. the allergic sensitivity of the recipient.

Removal of the Nest.

The key to completely removing wasps is to locate the nest and use effective pest control to remove it/them. Wasp nest could be located anywhere; in a tree, a crevice in a pathway, guttering or even inside the house – they will build a nest in any place where they can access the outdoors.

Spraying the wasp nest is a lot trickier than you might think. To effectively remove or destroy wasp nest, timing is everything. Wasps are inactive at night and they really respond well to light. Any treatment or attempt in removing wasp nest is best done at night with as little light as possible. Avoid direct contact with a flashlight as wasps will immediately sense the light and leave their nests. There are sprays for wasps that could be used as far as 20 feet from the nest to protect anyone from wasps. But protection is still required as wasps are social insects which means they often attack in groups.

When they are small wasp nest removal is easier and some home owners will go about this themselves successfully.  As the nests grow so does the number of wasps and their activities.  Wasps have flight paths to and from the nest, so standing in the wrong place can result in being bombarded and stung by many.  If you kill a wasp outside of its nest, it can give off a scent/ pheromone which can alert other wasps in the nest to come out and fight, again resulting in multiple wasp stings.

Treating a mature nest takes expertise.

Particularly when the wasp nests are located in hard to reach areas.  Depending on the nest size and location, Pest Controllers are equipped with long reach lances which shoot insecticidal powders into the Wasp Nests effectively or alternatively will use commercial strength liquid insecticides.

Costs for Wasp Nest Removal varies depending on location of the nest (eg ground floor versus second story) and also the number of nests so it pays to obtain a quote first. The very best way to ensure clean safe wasp nest removal is to call on professional pest control services to carry out the removal.

We were away down in Hyams Beach and my son (5) cam screaming like crazy that he had been stung. Turns out there was a tiny little nest of black wasps just under a sheltered balcony railing. They were incredibly aggressive and I have to wait until they left and ran in and knocked it down. If they had of been any bigger it would have been too risky – they are nuts when it comes to guarding their nests.

One of the behavioural traits of European wasps is to hang around human society and one of their favourite foods is soft drink from cans. They LOVE it!

People have been killed by European wasps (actually bees too) through injesting a wasp from a soft drink can and being stung in the mouth.

Beware of the Multiple Stings! When a Wasp Stings it will give off a scent which alerts other Wasps so if you are ever stung by a Wasp, remain alert & remove yourself from the area fast. A technician of ours recently was stung on the bottom lip while undergoing a nest removal. He was unfortunate to receive a second sting to the same spot by a fellow wasp but lucky enough to ensure his mouth was closed so the attacking wasps could not enter to sting, which could be fatal.
