For most of us, the most valuable asset we own is our home, so for peace of mind, it’s vital to commission an annual Termite Inspection.
Termites, or White Ants as they are often called, feed on wood, so if your home contains wooden frames or structural elements, then it’s likely that at some point in time your home could be at risk of Termite Infestation and Termite Damage that could run into the thousands.
Detecting Termite Damage through inspection
The need for effective Termite Control is because without it Termite Damage often goes undetected because Termites eat from the inside out, so damage can be substantial by the time it is detected.
Signs of Termite Infestation and Termite Damage:
> Wood that sounds hollow when tapped;
> Gaps or crumbling wooden beams;
> Termite mud tubes, which run above ground and are built by Termites as tunnels to move about without exposure.

Reticulation Systems
Reticulation Systems are physical barriers that also store chemical treatments and are designed to impede the entry of termites into the building as well as aid in the detection and eradication of termites if entry still becomes possible.
In Queensland, builders must have a physical termite barrier or a reticulation system installed before a concrete slab is poured for a new building. With Termites causing more damage in Australia than fire, flood and other accidental causes it pays for all new houses in all parts of Australia to be fitted with a termite reticulation system. There are a few types around so it pays to discuss your options with your Pest Controller who will be able to assess your individual needs based on your geographical location, building structure & budget constraints to name a few of the variables. Most reputable reticulation systems available also require the pest controller to be accredited or certified with the installation and monitoring of these systems.
Treated Zones – Termite Barriers
Termite Treated Zones, also known as Termite Barriers are a popular and proven method of termite prevention for new and existing structures. It involves installing, monitoring & treating the soil around the perimeter of the building with termiticide that has long lasting residual effect. Concreted areas are drilled approximately 200mm apart and the termiticide is injected into each hole. Monitoring of the termite barriers are performed generally annually by your Pest Controller who will issue additional chemical treatment if required. Termites that do prey into the treated zone are repelled away. There are several types of Termite Barriers available and they differ in cost, monitoring requirements & structural differences to name a few variables. It is a good idea to discuss what system best suits your needs with your Pest Control and Termite Specialist.
Termite Baiting
A popular method used for controlling termites is “termite baiting”. This treatment involves the use of wood treated with chemicals that act as bait for the worker termites.
The workers ingest the toxic wood and carry it back to the nest, where the entire termite colony is exposed and infected.
While termite baiting can be an effective short-term solution, it is not 100% successful in totally eradicating termites from your property. Sometimes not all termites in the colony are affected by the toxin, which results in the survivors creating a new colony.
In addition, although termite baiting may eliminate one colony of termites, it doesn’t prevent further colonies from taking over.
To protect your home and family against termite pests, the solution is at hand.
